Recovery After Endoscopic Surgery

Endoscopic repair is designed to be the lighter procedure, and the recovery reflects that.

Most babies spend one night in the hospital and go home the next day. Incisions are small, swelling is generally limited, and most infants return to normal feeding and sleeping patterns quickly.

How Helmet Therapy Works

A cranial molding helmet does not squeeze or press the head into shape. It works the opposite way: the helmet contacts the areas of the skull that are already prominent and leaves open space where growth is needed.

As the brain grows, and infant brain growth is rapid, the skull expands into the open areas of the helmet, and head shape improves progressively.

Recovery After Traditional (Open) Surgery

Open cranial vault surgery is a larger operation, and recovery is correspondingly longer.

Children typically remain in the hospital 3 to 7 days, occasionally including a night or two in the pediatric intensive care unit for close monitoring.

Parents stay with their child around the clock, and our patient floor rooms are designed for parents to room in.

Swelling, particularly around the eyes and forehead, is expected in the first days after open surgery and can look dramatic before it improves.

It generally peaks within the first several days and then resolves.

Our team prepares parents for this in advance, because knowing it is coming makes it far less alarming.

Skull bone generally heals over 2 to 6 months.

During that window, your surgeon may recommend a protective helmet, which serves a different purpose than a molding helmet: it protects the healing skull rather than shaping it.
